24 days of Xmas: Kat

Introducing our first ever blog guest post – As part of the Xmas Guest post series of 24 days of Xmas – Let us see what Xmas is all about for 24 different people. We asked each blogger 10 questions to learn about them and their Xmas plans. Our first is Kat, so let her get on with it:

1, Introduce yourself, tell us about you, what you do, why did you start blogging?
Hi! I’m Kat, aka, The Boozy Housewife. I am a stay-at-home wife. I started blogging because being having spent most of my life in creative jobs, (I worked as a tattoo artist for 15 years, and also as a mixologist for a number of years) I needed a creative outlet, and I have always loved writing. I believe if everyone took a good look at their life, they would find they have a lot to share with the world, and I wanted contribute the things I have learned.

2. How do you spend Xmas day?
We usually try to travel to either Minnesota or to Maryland to visit my or my husband’s family respectively, so Christmas day is spend doing whatever they have planned that year. This year it’s going to be Minnesota, and I believe my mother is just planning a quiet day gathering for the immediate family which includes my parents, and 3 siblings with their children, and significant others, and of course my husband and myself.

3. Best money saving tip for Xmas?
Book travel early as you can, the closer to the holiday you get, the more your tickets are going to cost if you plan to fly or take a train.
Also remember, that Christmas isn’t about who gets the most expensive gifts. Find things that are meaningful, gift that all by itself will make a lasting memory. These things tend to be less expensive. If you must go all out for the gift giving part though, My husband and I set up a savings account with our bank, and arranged for all our debit card purchases made throughout the year be rounded up to the nearest dollar, with the excess change deposited directly into the savings account. You would be shocked at how much money you have in there at the end of the year, and you will have saved it without even noticing it!

4. What present would you love to receive if money was no object?
As I stated above, gifts aren’t really important to me, however, if I had to pick something, I would want an original work by Frida Kahlo, my favorite artist.

5. Breakfast on Xmas morning usually consists of?
The works! I usually get up wherever we are that year, before the family, put on coffee, and make my special spiced eggnog pancakes, eggs, sausage, and serve it with fresh pomegranate and fruit juice.

6. Do you do anything special on Xmas Eve to celebrate?
The 24th, if we are in MN was usually a day at Grandma’s house, we would go there in the evening for cocktails and finger foods. This year however, will be our first Christmas without her, so, I am not sure what will happen that day.

7. Favourite Xmas song and why?
Nat King Cole’s rendition of ‘The Christmas Song’ I just love his warm voice, and think its perfectly matched to the song, the mood, and the season.

8. Favourite festive film?
Miracle on 34th Street.

9. Who do you spend Xmas with?
Family Family Family

10. What does Christmas mean to you? Do you think we have lost the original meaning of Christmas?
As a practicing Pagan, my views on this holiday have changed since I was child being brought up in a Catholic family. I have come to see this whole season as a time of birth and the beginning of renewal. I think that the idea is the same no matter what faith you practice, It doesn’t matter if you celebrate the birth of the ‘sun’, which brings with it the promise for the rebirth of the earth, and renewal of the land, or if you celebrate the birth of the Son of God, who brought with him a promise of a new kind of life, with a renewal of the soul. This is a time to cast off the old, and realize that the future is upon us, and anything is possible.

I do believe that the original meaning of this season, whatever you believe, has been somewhat clouded in modern days. Sadly, it is a very commercialized holiday. I have hope though that there are still many out there who haven’t lost the true spirit of this time of the year, and are passing that down to future generations. As long as someone out there has hope, not all is lost.

  1. Great guest post!! Nice getting to know you more Kat! Spiced eggnog pancakes sound really interesting, I don’t quite remember how eggnog tastes like in the first place (cause I’ve only had it once..years ago) but I’d def try that! I love Nat King Cole as well, his voice is indeed very soft and soothing. 🙂
